Launching a podcast can be a fun way to connect with your audiences. But so many podcasts crash and burn after only a few episodes that it’s worth considering where these short-lived shows went wrong. For starters, here are a few ideas for getting your podcast launched on the right foundation:

Know Your Reasons

Know what your goals are for the podcast and have metrics to determine whether you’ve reached those goals. Otherwise, your podcast is going to get shoved aside by all the same forces of nature that push out every other ill-defined business idea: busyness, putting out fires, and scrolling on social media.

Think Long-Term

You’re unlikely to launch your podcast with a ton of fanfare. Probably the only people that will know you’re doing it are the followers you have on social media, your email mailing list, and your employees. Definitely plan to promote it, but be prepared for it to take some time to build up a large audience. This is something that happens over a long period, not just a few weeks.

Prioritize Sustainability

Come up with regular, repeatable show segments. Plan your topics based on what’s popping in your other formats. In other words, make it easy to keep it going. If you get too ambitious about the types of guests you’ll have or the amount of time it takes to prepare, you will fizzle out fast.

Now that you’ve built a podcast on solid philosophies, let’s look at a few specific techniques that may help you launch more successfully:

Define Your Niche

If you make a show that targets everyone, nobody will listen. You need to shoot for a small viable target audience. Discuss topics that matter to that narrow audience, and you’ll likely see it grow over time.

Trade Favors

You probably know some others in your industry or related industries that also have podcasts. Trade guest appearances, and agree ahead of time that you’ll not only follow a loose script, but also allow one another time to discuss what each of you is passionate about. This gives both of your shows a generous, authentic tone.

Apply Marketing Tools

Apply search engine optimization (SEO) best practices to your podcast. Promote it across your other marketing channels. Create a landing page for those that arrive at your website via your podcast. In other words, treat it as another important channel in your marketing strategy.
